Turfgrass and Forage Seed

SARDA Ag Research conducts agricultural research in a unique area known for its forage seed production.  Our research in this area focuses on the productivity of the forage seed crops, minor use registrations of herbicides for weed control, the application and use of growth regulators and fungicides, pest control, establishment, and removal after their economic production goals are accomplished.  SARDA Ag Research’s research benefits producers and increases the sustainability of farms.  Often the use of forage seed crops builds soil health, protects against erosion, increases the crop rotation cycle, protects against the build-up of diseases and pests, reduces yearly input costs, and often spreads out the workload on the farm. We partner with the Peace Region Forage Seed Association, and together, we have retained the expertise of Calvin Yoder, B.Sc. P.Ag. who has 30-year experience in this field. We aim to share information and prioritize research addressing issues in this area.

Forages we have researched include creeping red fescue, alsike clover, bromegrass, and timothy seed.

Calvin’s current research projects include the following:

  • Fungicide trials on grass seed crops
  • Growth regulators on grasses and clovers
  • Herbicide trials on grasses and clover
  • Variety trials on grass seed crops and alsike and red clovers
